Raising funds, beginning work

“The Alaska Suite” benefit

The Nelda Swiggett Quintet’s May 15 benefit performance of “The Alaska Suite” brought in more than $6,000 in ticket sales and another $6,000 in donations. Thank you to Nelda Swiggett, her fellow musicians, and everyone who took this opportunity to learn more about climate change while supporting Green Buildings Now.

Although we have a long way to go to make buildings at the future South Beacon Hill Resilience Hub energy-efficient and free of fossil fuels, this fundraiser was a great start. We’ve raised $60,000 toward our $200,000 goal.

Work begins

Thanks to your contributions, workers recently insulated the Bethany United Church of Christ sanctuary, Rainier Valley Cooperative Preschool and community meeting space. Green Buildings Now paid for this work and for repainting to restore walls to their prior condition.

A contract has been signed for installation of solar panels and backup batteries (funded by other sources). Proceeds from “The Alaska Suite” benefit and previous donations will allow the Resilience Hub partners to hire contractors to design, obtain permits and begin installing heat pumps that will replace oil and gas furnaces.
